Taylor
Hall
Chico State University
SWLA has completed preliminary design drawings
for a new classroom building at Chico State University. Taylor Hall will provide
new academic and arts facilities, including classrooms, faculty offices, a
dance recital hall, art, ceramics and glass studios, and the University Art
Gallery. The heart of the complex is the central courtyard. Modeled on a traditional
academic cloister, the space serves as the forecourt to five large lecture
halls and the ceramics and glass studios. Enclosed by steps and a low seat
wall, the center of the courtyard is depressed to create a smaller gathering
space within the cloister. A specimen Valley Oak will anchor the space; smaller
flowering trees will provide additional shade and seasonal interest.
