College Eight
University of California, Santa Cruz
Located on a sloping, 12 acre site overlooking Monterey Bay, College
Eight includes student residences, classrooms, faculty offices, a library,
dining commons, a coffeehouse and recreation facilities. The site plan
and landscape design were developed to emphasize a careful fit between
the buildings and the surrounding natural environment. Major open spaces
are located along a formal axis that provides pedestrian access through
the site. The lower residential portion of the College is centered
on the library and two small quads enclosed by dorm buildings. The
upper, academic, portion of the College is sited around a major paved
space enclosed by the library, dining commons, coffeehouse, and classroom
building with its landmark tower.
Project completed by Stephen Wheeler while with Wallace Roberts & Todd
in San Francisco, California.
