7th, 9th and San Carlos Streets
San Jose State University

Located in downtown San Jose, the San Jose State campus was originally divided by several city streets. The streets were turned over to the University in 1992 for use as a pedestrian-oriented open space amenity for the campus. The streets were replaced with a park-like environment of open lawns, shade trees and walkways. The fountain at 7th and San Carlos Streets is a major hub of the campus, activated by intersecting pedestrian routes and surrounded by academic and student service buildings. California fan palms, pepper trees, and native oaks define entry points and diversify the existing plant collections. Custom tiles, sandstone pavers and traditional street furniture complement the architecture of the campus.
