1221 Jones Street is an apartment building on the top of Nob Hill. Designed by William Wurster and completed in 1970, the public spaces of this 12 story building have been recently expanded and remodeled. A key component of the project was the redesign of the second floor atrium garden located adjacent to the fitness and community rooms. Paved with black basalt and crushed granite, the garden provides a flexible outdoor space that is sheltered from the strong winds. The plant palette of Japanese maples, white azaleas, ferns and boxwood brings a ’60s modern character to the space and compliments the interiors of the community room.
